Hungary has a centuries-old winemaking tradition and is one of Central Europe’s most interesting wine-producing countries, particularly renowned for its white wines and the historic sweet wines of Tokaj.

The Tokaj region is the symbol of Hungarian viticulture and owes much of its reputation to Furmint, a grape variety capable of producing both dry wines with freshness, minerality and good structure, and the celebrated Tokaji Aszú sweet wines, made from grapes affected by noble rot. Alongside Furmint, native varieties such as Hárslevelű and Juhfark are grown, together with several international grape varieties.

Hungarian wine production also includes red wines, particularly from areas such as Eger, Szekszárd and Villány, where both native and international varieties are cultivated. The result is a remarkably diverse wine landscape, ranging from fresh, mineral whites to structured reds and complex, long-lived dessert wines.
